Is leatherworking mid for goldmaking? Forever Professions A to Z

Only two professions to go, so let’s take a look at leatherworking!

Historical performance is OK

If we go back to classic leatherworking was an OK goldmaking profession. As with blacksmithing you are mostly crafting equippable gear, but for leatherworking it is leather and mail armor. You can also craft armor kits which is a type of enchant for gear. There are some very good gear recipes that sold quite well, but outside of that armor kits were mostly irrelevant, leading to a profession that is overall fine, but nothing too special.

New recipe overview

When it comes to new recipes there are of course the set of new BoP gear recipes. These are mostly going to be used by players when leveling, and since they are BoP they won’t impact the gold you can make with leatherworking. There are also a lot of new uncommon crafted items, that could see some sales, but they are a lot weaker than other gear sources. At max level there are some epic crafted items in the database, and depending on the availability of raid materials these can be good. There are also new armor kits, with much better buffs than the old ones.

No weapons and uncommon armor only

For the leveling period I consider the goldmaking value of leatherworking quite low. You can’t craft any weapons, and the only armor you can craft and sell to other players is uncommon quality for the most part. That being said at higher levels there are some very good crafts, including the infamous devilsaur set which was Pre-raid BiS for every physical class in classic. With classic seeing much higher material yields overall, I expect devilsaur leather may also be less cartel controlled, so once we get to the 50s this set should sell REALLY well as it will keep most classes from level 53 all the way into raiding.

The new armor kits look juicy

The new armor kits look really good. They seem to give flexible spellpower enchants and attack power enchants thtat can be applied to many different slots. But as always with enchants the market here doesn’t really materialize until we get into max level territory as players prefer not to enchant gear they won’t keep around for long.

Epic crafts

As always with the new BoE epic crafts you need an item acquired by disenchanting raid epics. This may make them quite expensive early on and we could see most players who want these items buy them through trade and a commission rather than buying it on the AH outright. That being said we are on really big realms so there should be supply for most items quite quickly.

Overall summary

I think leatherworking has some potential, but mostly for higher levels. From a goldmaking perspective there’s very little benefit from the early recipes. I would only pick leatherworking early if you really want to use the BoP gear, but outside of that I don’t find it super compelling. Longer term with max level crafts and armor kits I see more potential, and you should aim to eventually have it in your arsenal for that reason.
