Today I will cover what you need to do to make gold with crafting orders, with a new patch this market will be hot as players need to recraft their embellished gear!
The main value: gear
The main item type you will be making gold with when it comes to crafting orders is crafted spark gear. This is seasonal, and needs to be recrafted when a new patch and new spark becomes available. The item type that has been most in demand has varied over time, but weapons are usually a popular slot to guarantee a strong weapon early. Outside of that bracers, rings and cloak are often popular as long term the ilvl is lower than myth track drops, so you want the embellishments in slots with less stats. Rings and amulets are a special mention because they only have secondaries, and having the right secondary stats can crush a ilvl increase, but the priority is usual on embellishments for the first items.
Patch cycle driven
This market is VERY driven by patch cycles. New patches means that all crafted gear can be upgraded to new tiers. This generally means that everyone is looking to get their items crafted around the same time. In particular the day a new spark is available so items can be upgraded will be the busiest day of the patch!
This means that the more time you have to play a specific day, the better you will do with crafting orders.
Knowledge builds
Knowledge builds depends on the profession, but in general you need to reach at least the point where you can guarantee quality 5 for a max ilvl item with embellishments and stat missives with concentration. Preferably you want to craft without concentration, but if you havent grinded all your knowledge you can do an order or two with concentration. The builds pretty much give themselves, you need maximum skill in the item slot you are targeting. The end nodes are usually most efficient at giving skill per point, so maxing them first makes sense as crafting is very concentrated, at least for armor, where only a few slots are good. Below are some sample builds.
Profession stats don’t matter much
A nice thing about this is that you are primarily making gold with the commission fee. This means profession stats don’t matter as much. That being said you get to keep any resourcefulness procs, so resourcefulness does have value and you should at least get all rare profession equipment pieces with resourcefulness for this. The epic tool is more of a nice to have.
Setting your prices
Crafting orders are realm dependent. Luckily there is a very easy way of finding a good price, simply send whispers to 3-4 people on your realm that are advertising in trade chat for the same recipe you plan on selling and ask them what their fee is. Then you can adjust if you think the price level is too high. You can also get by on just asking for tips and getting the resourcefulness procs. This latter approach is very good if you can consistently be available in trade for instance if you have a second account.
Getting business
To get customers you have to be spamming in trade chat. I’m sure you’ve seen the incessant spam, you will have to join it. The easiest way is with the addon autoflood, which will post at a set interval. You set the message by typing /floodmsg <your message>. You can include links to your profession or to a specific item. Advertise any professions you have across one or more characters. For instance: /floodmsg Tailor looking for work: Guaranteed rank 5 tailoring bracers link!
Then you need to set how often the message should be posted. Every couple of minutes is reasonable, /floodrate 180 for 3 minutes can be a starting point. Then you set the channel with /floodchan 2. Now you can turn it on or off by typing /flood on or /flood off in chat.
You’ll have to be available to answer quickly as you will have competition and players will just message the next one if you don’t answer.
Now get to work!
