Mists of Pandaria PvP gear part 3: Leatherworking

Today we will get into the last profession that has access to the Mists of Pandaria Crafted PvP gear, Leatherworking. Leatherworking has access to the most recipes out of all the crafting professions. You can craft both mail and leather gear, which gives a ton of items.

What is this market all about?

I suggest heading over to my blacksmithing post to get the simple rundown of this market. The general gist is that the items are desireable as transmog. The major advantage is that there are so many items you can craft that you are almost guaranteed to get sales regularly.

How good is Leatherworking?

It’s very good. As you can see from the crafting window below the profit margins are very high. My sales have not been amazing, but the number of items sold is very comparable to Tailoring. I have been stocking slightly fewer leatherworking items as I have had some trouble getting my hands on enough Exotic Leather.

Still it’s bringing in about 20k gold per month in sales, with profit margins from 100-300%. So that’s between 10 and 15k gold in profit.

I am on the same lax posting schedule here, with reposts every 2-4 days, depending on when I have time to empty my mailbox.

Unlocking the recipes

As with the two other professions there are two daily cooldowns that unlock the recipes. For the basic cooldown that unlocks the dreadful recipes there are two possibilities. Magnificence of Leather and Magnificence of Scales. Leather uses Exotic leather and Scales uses Prismatic Scale. They both unlock the exact same recipes. It is usually easier to obtain Exotic Leather so I suggest the magnificence of Leather one. The recipe can be obtained as a world drop in Pandaria.

The other daily cooldown is Hardened Magnificent Hide. It takes two Magnificent hides. The recipe is also obtained as a Pandaria world drop, so just head out and kill stuff in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

The recipe that turns 50 Exotic Leather into a Magnificent Hide can be learned from your leatherworking trainer.

There are a total of 148 recipes to learn, so it will take you 74 days to learn all of them. So you should get started sooner rather than late!

Crafting the items

Leatherworking has a major difference from the other two professions. All the items are crafted using magnificent hides. This is the regular daily cooldown material. It can also be made without a daily cooldown, but that recipe costs 50 Exotic leather.

The finished items have costs ranging from 1 to 4 magnificent hides. To sustain crafting in this market you need a very large amount of Exotic Leather. Just funding the daily cooldowns takes 70 leather per day. On my high pop realm there will typically be less than 1000 leather at any one time. Running shopping scans regularly is absolutely crucial to keep your items in stock!

TSM setup

My TSM setup is pretty much identical to the setup I use for the blacksmithing and tailoring groups. I post using my general crafted armor operation and I use the same crafting operation to restock up to one of each.

Happy hunting!

  1. I tried farming the Magnificent Hides recipe without success. Really old comments in WoWHead says LW must be maxed at 600. With today’s skills being so differently scaled, I don’t think there is a 600 anymore. Do you think LW has to be maxed in order to get the recipe to drop?

    1. You have never needed max level leatherworking before, so I would be very surprised if they changed it.
